Diary of the Gan's Children

The Growing Up Years

Last day of school

20 November was the last day of school in LSK for Gerald and Marcus. Not just because it's the end of the school term, but because Gerald will go Primary 1 and Marcus to a new Kindergarten next year.

So, here's a picture that Mummy took for both of us.

Thank you Mrs Elsie Tan and all the LSK teachers that have played a pivotal role in teaching us! We love you and God bless you lots!

Daddy lookalike?

Some say Ethan looks like Sok Sok Andy, some say like Daddy, some say a mix between Gerald and Marcus ... hmmm ... who does he look like?

New fishing spot

We found a new fishing place at Farmway 1 - cleaner and more conducive for Mummies, wives, girlfriends and children to sit around to chat.
Look at the fish that Daddy caught and Gerald's astonished look.

But alas, when the fish was tied and left in the water, Gor Gor Marcus played with it and the fish swam away ..

Daddy and Mummy love seeing the 3 boys playing together. It's a joy to see Gor Gors Gerald and Marcus play with him, attempt to make him laugh and look after him.

Our favourite shot, to date.
Thank you Jesus for giving us 3 wonderful boys, each with their unique personality. Lord, watch over them and teach Daddy and Mummy to nurture them to their fullest potential.

Thank you Jesus for watching over me! Both Daddy and Mummy are growing biceps just from carrying me around :)

Watch what you say in front of the kids

Mummy went back to work in end Jul, so that explains the long absence of blog updates.

Anyway, parents must watch what they say cos kids learn everything.

Example 1:

Mummy likes to challenge us to think for ourselves, instead of spoonfeeding us. Each time we ask a question, she'll ask us what we think about it.

Marcus: Mummy, can we eat another sweet?
Mummy: What do you think, dear?
Marcus: Hmm..cannot. Because we already ate 1 today.
Mummy: Clever boy

How it backfired on mummy

Mummy: Son, can you bring Ethan's bottle here please?
Gerald: what do you think, Mummy?
Mummy was shocked because he had replied back in an authoritative tone.

Example 2:

Mummy has a habit of saying "coconut" whenever a car cuts into her path. One day both boys were in the car and another driver cut in.

Mummy opened her mouth then gasped because she stopped herself in time.

Gerald: Mummy, you wanted to say something isit?
Mummy: erm...nope. Why?
Gerald: I know Mummy...you wanted to say "coconut".
Again Mummy was speechless

Kids are SO smart!!!!

Mummy says the wierdest things when she's tired

Contrary to Mummy's earlier blog that she can survive on lesser sleep, here's proof that she needs MORE zzz ...

#1
Mummy, mumbling to herself: "I think i should bathe my car." when she SHOULD have said "car needs a wash!"

#2
Daddy smses Mummy in the morning:
"Dear, i think you better get some rest later in the afternoon. Do you know that last night you talked in your sleep and asked Ethan not to let go gas?"

#3
Mummy nearly falls asleep even while trying to teach Gor Gor Gerald!

What the boys said
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
#1
Gerald: Mummy, you haven't gone to work for a long time. Are you a housewife?
Mummy: Nope, just staying at home for awhile to look after the 3 of you
Silence for awhile
Gerald: When Daddy comes home, can he be a househusband?

#2
This took place between Auntie Pam and Gerald during Auntie Sue's wedding
Gerald: Auntie Pam, I'm looking for my Mummy. Do you know where she is?
Auntie Pam: I think she brought Ethan out to breast-feed him.
Silence for awhile
Gerald: Auntie Pam, is there a breast room here in church?
Poor Auntie Pam had to control her laugher!

Milestones
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
In the last 2 months that Mummy has stayed at home, we boys have achieved certain milestones. They are

1. Gerald has become more disciplined in his management of time, reminding Mummy that he wants to do his work in his afternoon. Work meaning, reading storybooks, practising Chinese, asking Mummy to test him on addition
2. Marcus has declared that he does not want to wear diapers at night anymore because he is a Gor Gor. Although there have been minor accidents ...
3. Ethan can lift up his head at 1 1/2 month! Lying down on his tummy helps him sleep better, but because he isn't that strong yet, he still sleeps on his back in the night

And a huge milstone for Mummy herself? She has discovered that she can survive on lesser sleep, become more auntie (when she walks around the estate and sees other Mummies with children, she will walk towards them and try to strike up a conversation) and even more funny, she laughs at her own lame jokes and "1 way conversations" with Di Di Ethan.

Holidays for Gerald and Marcus
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
1 week of Sep holidays! Sheer bliss for us boys! Sleep in Daddy's and Mummy's room, wake up late, go out with Mummy and enjoy ourselves thoroughly!

We went IKEA, Sentosa, bowling, Go-Go Bambini .... tiring but so shiok!

Marcus loving every minute of it               Gerald balancing the ball

Ethan soaking every minute of the noise and excitement. Wait a minute, Mummy suddenly thinks this picture reminds her of the Korean drama "Da Chang Jin" - you know the gigantic hair pieces on those ladies-in-waiting in the palaces? HAHAHAHAH!!!

Birthdays
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
18 August was Daddy's birthday and because Mummy was still in confinement, we celebrated it at home. Even though it was a small affair with only a few of us, it was noisy!

The cake!

So many longans! Yummy :)

Anyway, the other flavour that should be tried is mango :)

Daddy and us!

Thank you Daddy for loving us so much! You sacrifice sleep, time, energy for us 3 (and Mummy of cse). Lots of tokens for you!!!! wink *

And on 4 Sep, it was Mummy's turn to celebrate her birthday! Mummy wanted to eat sashimi so Gerald and Marcus unanimously chose "Momoya" for the feast! Here's us enjoying ourselves!

Gor Gor Gerald and his 2nd bowl of Japanese pasta

Gor Gor Marcus with his favourite Jap dish - Edamame. Don't ask why he likes it. Mummy and Daddy also don't know! But give him a big bowl of it, and he'll sit contented and quietly, savouring every bean!

And what was Ethan doing?

At 1st he was looking at us eating ....        Then he dozed off ... wahaha

Changing looks of Ethan
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
Yes, Ethan is now 1 month and 22 days old ... although everyone that sees his size always exclaim that he looks like he's 3 months old!

His features change all the time:

 11 days old

14 days old

1 mth 8 days (look at his double chin!! Mummy loves his long eye lashes :)

1 mth 10 days

1 mth 22 days

Another new journey begins ...

Gerald calls himself Number 1 brother (or big brother) and is very protective and loving towards Ethan. He loves singing and playing peek-a-boo with his youngest brother.

Marcus calls himself Number 2 brother and loves sitting quietly near Ethan and just smiling sweetly at his younger brother. When we have to bring Ethan to the Polyclinic for the routine jaundice check, he cries because he thinks we are taking Ethan away from him.

This evening, Gong Gong and Por Por volunteered to bring Ethan back to their place so that both Daddy and Mummy can have a night without having to wake up to feed him. Marcus cried buckets when Por Por came because he thought she was not going to return Ethan, so in the end, he went home with them too, leaving Gerald with Daddy and Mummy.

By the way, Ethan drinks LOADS of milk. So much so that Mummy cannot keep up with his unending cries for milk that she has to supplement with formula. By day 3 o4 4, he was drinking 90 ml and sometimes 120ml of formulat! To regulate and boost breastmilk, Mummy has been expressing every 2 hours. Must pray for more breastmilk!! Mummy has turned from being a hippo to a cow!

Looking intently at the camera .. although he can't focus yet

Who does Ethan look like? We think he has Gor Gor Gerald's face shape, Mummy's nose and Daddy's lips and he loves to pout, just like Gor Gor Marcus!

The 3 musketeers! Our favourite picture!

Welcome Ethan Gan Hon Aun
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots

After waiting for 40 weeks and 1 day, Di Di Ethan decided to come out to see all of us on Sat, 1 Aug!

Mummy experienced regular contractions while watching "Faith like Potatoes" in church on Fri night. Even though the contractions came at an interval of 15 minutes, Mummy wanted to make sure that this was it! So after the movie, she went to eat Teochew Porridge with the cell :)

During the night, the contractions came on every 10 minutes, but because it wasn't intense pain, Mummy just decided to continue sleeping. It was only in the morning at around 9am and after a bowl of tau huay with gingko nuts that Mummy decided that she SHOULD go to KKH.

Upon her arrival at the delivery suite, after revealing that she was 2cm dilated when she saw Dr Khong on Thurs morning, the nurses wheeled her into the labour room. A quick check revealed she was already 4cm dilated and the MO called Dr Khong to update him. He gave the go ahead to give Mummy Oxytocin to speed up the contractions so that Mummy's cervix could open quickly. Here's an estimated idea of what happened in the delivery room:

11am: arrival at Labour room 11
11+am: Monitoring of contractions and discovery of cervix being dilated at 4cm
11+am: Burst water bag
12pm: Epidural administered
12+pm: Continuous monitoring of contractions
1+pm: Discovering of cervis being dilated at about 9cm
2pm: Strong sensation of wanting to push
2+pm: Arrival of Dr Khong (cool and steady as he always is .. he was chatting to someone AGAIN outside the room until the nurse yelled for him to come in!)
2:36pm: Arrival of Ethan Gan Hon Aun weighing at 3.625kg (the biggest among all of us!)
2.38pm: Cleaning up of Ethan, cutting of amblical cord, clearing of placenta etc ...
2.50pm: Mummy's first call to Gong Gong and Por Por to let them hear Ethan's cries and the rush of smses being sent out to family and friends :)

Mummy, 10 minutes before the real pushing began

Di Di Ethan on the weighing scale. He's the heaviest among us 3!

Both Mummy and Ethan were discharged from hospital on Sun, 2 Aug. Home Sweet Home!

Lunch at IKEA
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots
Mummy decided to bring us to IKEA for lunch on a Friday afternoon, just in case she goes into labour over the weekend! And of course we were excited because we could eat our favourite food and play at our favourite haunts!

Gerald's favourite food at IKEA: Meatballs and princess cake!
Marcus's favourite food at IKEA: Pasta!
Tita's favourite food at IKEA: Nasi Padang (actually every time we go to a food court Tita always orders Nasi Padang)
Mummy's favourite food at IKEA: Chicken wings (she can polish off 6 on her own when she's not watching her waistline!)

Gor Gors Gerald and Marcus ask Mummy everyday when Di-Di Ethan is coming out and Mummy is clueless. Mummy is now in her 40th week of pregnancy and she is very very tired, especially since the weight is causing the nerves on her back to act up again, and she can't walk properly.

These are some comments from people, when they still see Mummy with the big belly:

1. "Aiyoh, i see you so big, i feel tired for you"
2. "Better don't see you next week in cell/church"
3. "Eh...got a feeling Ethan might come out only in your 41st or 42nd week leh"

Anyhow, Mummy calls herself a hippo now. Previously she called herself a waddling penguin, but after doing some research, has decided that she definitely can't BE a penguin. Cos even though penguins have a big tummy, they can still slide on their bellies. Penguins can leap out of water and land on ice. We cannot imagine Mummy doing the same .... so she is a hippo for now ....

Anyhow, as a challenge to get back into shape, Mummy has signed up for the Standard Chartered Marathon to be held in Dec!

Kids ARE smart

Daddy and Mummy being outsmart by Gor Gor

Conversation 1

Gerald: Daddy, the shop is on the 2nd floor
Daddy (looking surprised): Wow! You have good memory!
Gerald: Of course! I have good brains!
Mummy chuckles

Conversation 2

Gerald: Mum, i want to bathe myself
Mummy: Ok, remember to wash off the NDP sticker on your arm ok?!
Gerald (looking at the faded colour on his left arm): Mum, it's a tatoo, not a sticker
Daddy laughs

Gerald: Mummy, are you fat?
Mummy: No...i'm pregnant and it's not nice to say someone is fat
Gerald: Oh ... (lapses into deep thought)
Gerald: I think you're a pretty fat chick (and runs off)
Mummy is speechless ...

NDP NE Show '09
Family trip in Sunway Lagoon Dec 2008
[info]gantots

Daddy was given tickets to watch the NDP NE Show last Sat and of course we wanted to go!

Gerald and Marcus couldn't take their eyes off the entire parade, especially when the army tanks rolled in, helicopters flying overhead and the wonderful display of fireworks.

Gigantics tanks that rolled onto the floating platform                         Helicopters flying over us ... with lots of "oohs and aahs"

Only 30% of NDP's actual fireworks were displayed                  Mummy's favourite display. It brought tears to her eyes

Transformer fan

[info]gantots

Daddy and Mummy had brought us to watch Transformers and Di Di Marcus is thoroughly and absolutely in love with Bumblebee!

Every yellow car he sees, he'll excitedly point out "Bumblebeeeeeeeeeeee".

Mummy couldn't resist taking a picture of Marcus in this gigantic Bumblebee mask :)

"Grrrr .... I'm Bumblebee!"

Oh, and you know what Marcus said when Mummy asked him other than Bumblebee, which character he liked in the show?

He said, "i like the girl with the long tongue" (Remember the bad lady who tried to kiss Sam in his dorm?)

Mummy asked him why and he said, "Cos she's pretty ma!" Alamak .. fainted ....
